HTAP3-OPNS Modeling Experiments Chemistry-climate simulations (November 28)

28 November 2023 @ 14:00 16:00 UTC

We present a white paper describing our initial plans for the HTAP3-OPNS (Ozone, Particles, Nitrogen and Sulfur Deposition) experiments, which will focus on the simulation of new policy scenarios for aerosol and ozone precursors, including methane.  We invite you to join us for two online meetings to discuss aspects of this proposed plan.

The first session will focus primarily on what can be learned by free-running simulations of coupled chemistry-climate and earth system models:

Chemistry-climate simulations: November 28 14:00-16:00 UTC

The second session will focus on what questions can also be addressed using specified dynamics, including using chemical transport models.

Specified dynamics simulations: December 1 14:00-16:00 UTC

All interested participants are invited to participate in both sessions.  If you are not able to join us, we welcome your comments on our proposed plan and expressions of interest in participation.  You can write to Tim.Butler@rifs-potsdam.de.

The HTAP1 and HTAP2 experiments helped call attention to the role of methane as a tropospheric ozone precursor and a powerful greenhouse gas.  At the upcoming UNFCCC COP28, there will be considerable attention on methane mitigation and the Global Methane Pledge implementation.  As COP28 comes to a close in Dubai, the Executive Body of the LRTAP Convention will convene in Geneva to consider launching negotiations to revise European and North American country commitments related to ozone, fine particles, nitrogen and sulfur deposition, including the possible inclusion of methane as an ozone precursor. Informing such decisions and actions at the regional and global scales is a primary objective of the HTAP3-OPNS experiments and will require us to mobilize quickly as a community.  We hope that you will join us.

Looking forward to your participation,

Terry, Tim, Jacek, and Rosa
